Jay Sean on Sesame Street?

Being an Indian, of course, I’m thrilled to see my fellow South Asian people be successful. These days, Jay Sean is one of the desi artists who has been representing well for the rest of us in the field of music. No longer are desis just seen as being doctors, scientists, engineers, and business people. Now, we have a voice (literally) in the world of entertainment as well. After the success of Slumdog Millionaire, the US and other non-Indian countries have been opened to the world of Bollywood.  NBC even tried a India-based show called “Outsourced.”  Indian actors are being seen more often on TV (there’s an indian cast member in 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreations, Big Bang Theory, etc.)

Back in May, the website I work for – – broke the news that pop singing sensation, Jay Sean, will be featured in an episode of Sesame Street. Sesame Street, which is a popular children’s show here in the states, typically calls artists on the show when they’ve made it in their respective fields .  Guess that Jay Sean has REALLY made it in the world of music!

Now that the episode has been filmed, we’ve got your exclusive look at the video Jay recorded with Grover –  Head over to UrbanAsian and check out the footage!!

Lady Gaga’s a man!

That’s right Lady Gaga’s a man!

Ok, not really, but if you saw the VMAs on MTV you know exactly what I’m talking about. Gaga showed up to the VMA’s dressed a dude!  Gaga’s known to push the limits of dress, style, and show appearances, but I doubt anyone expected her to show up as a man.  She called her male persona “Jo Calderone” who made her look like she had walked off the sets of “Grease” from the 1970s!

A few days before the VMAs went live, Lady Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, spoke to MTV News to explain Gaga’s decision to stay in character the whole show –

“The idea of Lady Gaga being a performance artist — and it’s starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her — is the first time I’ve experienced this with an artist… I love it. That’s something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night..”

Gotta give Gaga some mad props though because she did a great job acting as a male.  I’m sure some people probably didn’t even realize it was Gaga!  It was funny how dedicated she was to staying in character because she (or should I say “he”) even hit on Britney Spears when she went to collect her award.   Plus, the gender-bender seemed an appropriate way for Gaga to receive her award for her hit single, “Born this way.”  The amazing thing was that Gaga never broke character… not even once!  I guess it beat wearing a meat dress?

Gaga definitely proved her point that all you need to succeed is devotion to your art form!  However, I think that at least when presenting Britney’s award to her, she should’ve reverted back to her normal (I use that term lightly) Gaga avatar.  After all, it was supposed to be Britney’s moment, but Britney barely got any words out since “Jo” was hitting on her and trying to kiss her.  I’m sure Britney wished Madonna had been there instead!  Seriously though, it was all a bit awkward the way “Jo” was stumbling around while Britney tried to thank MTV and her fans.  I think this was one moment that needed Kanye’s help and interruption!

Wonder what Gaga will do next year… Just had a random thought – what if Gaga married Kanye?!?

Promo for Navin Kundra’s next track

It’s no secret.  I’m a gigantic fan of Indian music.  However, although I am a self-proclaimed desi-musicholic, you have to be REALLY good for me to truly be a fan of your music.  So, trust me when I say that Navin Kundra is one artist that you definitely have to watch.  He’s a powerhouse of talent and very versatile – just youtube “navin kundra” and “covers” to see the full range of his talent.

Anyway, Navin’s released the promo for his upcoming track : “Nach Le”.  Do check it out!  I think it’s gonna be amazing!

AR Rehman turns Heavy

My article, as seen on

Thought I’d share it on this blog too since I’m sure you’ll all be interested in this video!

Musical maestro AR Rahman has joined forces with rock legend Mick Jagger and other musical heavyweights Joss Stone, Damian Marley and Dave Stewart, to create the ultimate band – a band that truly lives up to its name – SuperHeavy!

SuperHeavy developed from Jagger and Stewart discussing what a band comprising of musicians from different genres would sound like.

Jagger explains, “Dave really wanted to make a record with a different group of musicians, in other words, with different backgrounds of music. Instead of everyone being a rock musician, or basically a blues musician, or some other genre, he wanted to get as many genres together that would fit. I said it sounds like a good idea, I never thought it would actually happen.”

Joss Stone was the first recruit, and the other artists were added soon after. The end result was “SuperHeavy” – a distinctive collaboration which perfectly encapsulates each artist’s unique talent and style. Despite their disparate backgrounds, the group instantly connected and hit the ground running, writing a whopping twenty-two songs in the first six days.

Says Rahman, “The first day I was in a daze thinking, ‘What am I doing? What’s my role?’ and then slowly we started writing with each other, and it was great. It took me way back to my high school days when I was playing in a rock band, but this one was a real one!”

Their songs were so good that their debut video “Miracle Worker” received over half a million hits within 36 hours of release, and is a clear indication of the creative vision of this unique collective of world-class musicians. The song seemlessly infuses the Caribbean inspired reggae beats of Damian Marley, the harmonious soul of Joss Stone, the swagger of Mick Jagger’s vocals, the Indian-influenced production of A.R. Rahman and Dave Stewart’s solid guitar skills!

This diverse and eclectic line up who share eleven Grammy Awards between them, have been recording together in various studios around the world, with the majority of the tracks on the project laid down over three weeks in Los Angeles earlier this year. The album will be unveiled in September and tracks include the first single ‘Miracle Worker’, plus ‘Satyameva Jayanate’, ‘Energy’, ‘Maya,’ and ‘SuperHeavy’ amongst others.

Miracle Worker, the first single is released through Universal Music and available to download now.

Sick DJ!!

DJ Kayper

DJ Kayper is definitely an amazing DJ!  According to DJ Jazzy Jeff (yup the guy who acted with Will Smith in “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” & collaborated with Will Smith on several tracks) she’s the best female DJ around! After watching the video below I’m sure you’ll be inclined to agree with Jazzy.

DJ Kayper has a radio show that airs on BBC Asian Network –

Kayper also has her own blog:

Lady Gaga and Bollywood

Hey Blog readers! You all probably know that I’m a big fan of music, movies, and dance (if you didn’t know, you know now!) So, you can guess how elated I was that Lady Gaga (one of my favorite artists) has shared her love of Bollywood! I think her over-the-top theatrics are the perfect match for Bollywood! Although, if she did a Bollywood movie she may just be the most normal person there… and actually may even be a bit under dressed!

Jokes aside – Gaga recently appeared on talk show host and ex-actress Simi Garewal’s new show, “India’s Most Desirable.” Gaga was shooting 15 interviews that day and Simi bagged one of them. In the interview, Gaga revealed just how much she loves India, Indian movies (“Bollywood”), and Indian food! Read more details at my Urban Asian article about Gaga:

I’m pretty excited to see a potentional Gaga collaboration!  Are you?
